Job Vacancy Carlisle: Web Developer
WEB DEVELOPER (Carlisle / Cumbria / Remote)
We’ve got a fantastic opportunity for an experienced developer to join us here at Sparrow Digital. We’re a small, friendly web development company based in Carlisle, and when we’re not building websites and supporting great clients, you’ll usually find us in the great outdoors, our favourite place to recharge and find inspiration.
We care deeply about creating a healthy work-life balance that works for our team. Whether it’s a bluebird morning on the fells or just time to reset, we believe in making space for the things that matter.
About the role
We’re looking for a Web Developer to join our growing agency. This is a key role in our small team, offering the chance to really make your mark and contribute to work we’re proud of.
You’ll be predominantly working with WordPress (including WooCommerce, multisites, and custom plugin development) and Shopify (Liquid). Our business is built on honesty and problem solving, with quality always front and centre, and we’re looking for someone who shares those values.
This role includes:
- Building and maintaining WordPress and Shopify websites
- Developing custom WordPress plugins and features
- Working with external agencies and collaborators to deliver high-quality work
- Managing and maintaining servers, DNS, and hosting environments
- Debugging and resolving advanced issues (JavaScript, PHP, etc.)
- Version control using Git
- Contributing to code reviews and consistent best practices
- Contributing to internal tools and ideas that help us do things better
What we’re looking for
You’re technically strong, with a sharp eye for detail and a passion for doing things properly. You’re proactive and thoughtful in your communication, and you’re just as comfortable working independently as you are collaborating with a team.
Essential skills:
- Strong experience with WordPress (including WooCommerce, multisites, and plugin development)
- Shopify (Liquid) knowledge
- Git version control
- Debugging JavaScript and PHP
- Experience working with servers, hosting environments, and DNS
- Strong communication skills
- A commitment to quality and improving systems and processes
- Command line experience
- Familiarity with MySQL
- Experience with third-party API integrations
A bit about us
We’re a close-knit team with a shared love for both digital and the outdoors. Our clients are mostly UK-based and span a variety of sectors, with a growing number in the outdoor and lifestyle industries. We work hard, communicate openly, and back each other up — and we’re looking for someone who fits that vibe.
The perks
- Flexible working hours
- Remote working
- Opportunities to shape your own role and grow with the business
- Supportive, down-to-earth team who value honesty, balance, and good work
